Monthly Programme: Privacy & Allah
With Shaykh Talal al-Azem

Saturday 29th March
After Isha Salah, 8pm

(followed by dinner)

The modern world has facilitated the sharing of information, both public and private, in ways unprecedented. In light of recent media revelations, we have begun to debate the effects of social technologies on the pubic fabric of our societies.

But there are other questions that we, as Muslims, might also ask about these innovations: What effects might a loss of privacy have upon our spiritual well-being, as individual souls seeking Allah? And how might the forfeiting of our privacy for the sake of a technologically-granted ease affect such fundamental social relationships as families, friendships, and communities—relationships in which we are meant to truly share our lives with others for His sake alone?

This lecture seeks to address these questions by examining the covenant taken by the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) with all who follow him regarding privacy, dignity, and the goodly life in God.

Shaykh Talal al-Azem was born and raised in the USA and graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where he studied History and Near Eastern Studies. Thereafter, he studied full-time the classical disciplines of Islamic learning in Syria. For ten years, he was under the tutelage of prominent scholars including Mufti Shaykh Adeeb Al-Kallas, Shaykh Khalid Al-Kharsa and Shaykh Mahmoud Al Misri. His interests include law, ethics and the disciplines of the classical Muslim education.

He completed his MA & Phd at Oxford University and is currently a lecturer at the university serving as an Early Career Fellow for Arabic & Islamic History.
He has edited many works and authored a work of his own entitled "Prayer of occasions", a book describing optional prayers that can be offered for related circumstances

He is the director of Oxford Traditional Knowledge Foundation, an institute dedicated to offering traditional knowledge of Islam and ways of living.
